EPR

ExtendedProducer Responsibility, or EPR, refers to the regulatory mechanism through
which manufacturers, producers, importers and brand owners (collectively
referred to as PIBOs) are held accountable for the management of all
post-consumer disposal of their electrical and electronic products.
Piercing
through the murky waters of EPR, businesses are obligated to ensure:
1. That
there is the collection of all post-consumer e-waste (Waste).
2. That
the collected Waste is channeled through an authorized recycler/dismantler.
3. That
all of the Waste collected is recycled or disposed of in accordance with accepted
environmental practices.
Finally, the
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which is a part of the Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) of the Government of India,
issues EPR Authorization Certificate(s).
According to the E-Waste (Management) Rules, manufacturers and importers of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE)
included in Schedule I will be required to
register on the CPCB EPR portal, partner with an authorized recycler, report
their projected e-waste generation(s) as well as submit their plans to carry
out and monitor compliance with the Producers EPR Compliance Programme and EPR
schemes through established recycling targets. In summary, both the consumer
and the producer are liable for e-waste after it leaves the product’s original
packaging.
Is EPR Registration Compulsory in India?
Yes, EPR is a legally required compliance type for
all Producers, Importers & Brand owners, for all product types, including,
but not limited to, Plastics, Electronics, Tyres, and Batteries.
